FLORENCE PARTNERS WITH WE ARE OCEAN TO EMPOWER CANCER FIGHTERS & SURVIVORS

FLORENCE is proud to announce its continued partnership with We Are Ocean, a transformative cancer recovery program founded by endurance paddler, ocean advocate, and longtime Florence Test Pilot, Jack Marshall Shimko. This collaboration reflects Florence’s core mission: to inspire exploration, resilience, and connection through the ocean.

Established in 2012 by Shimko, a Hodgkin’s lymphoma survivor currently battling chronic lymphocytic leukemia, We Are Ocean provides ocean-based adventures for teens and young adults fighting or surviving cancer. Now operating as an official program of the Newport Aquatic Center, the initiative offers immersive experiences—from local surf days to multi-day paddling and sailing expeditions—designed to foster healing, empowerment, and community among participants.

“Adventure is something cancer can’t take away,” says Shimko. “It will try, but I will find a path to get out there and continue to adventure no matter what cancer throws at me.”

Shimko’s enduring spirit and commitment to the ocean have made him a source of inspiration within the Florence community. As a Test Pilot, he has helped shape the brand’s gear through real-world use in challenging conditions, embodying Florence’s ethos of thriving in the elements.

FLORENCE has supported We Are Ocean through various initiatives, including the creation of the limited-edition product collaborations. Proceeds from the collaborations benefit the program, enabling more cancer fighters and survivors to experience the healing power of the ocean.
